Inverness drop off, Halkirk cemetery (ancestor hunt) - 17 May

Big day today as we say goodbye to Jen - it's been fun getting to know her and learn about her 'Clan' ancestors as we travel through Scotland. We are ready to go just before 10am and our Host pops by to meets us before we leave. She has outfitted her place (2 flats, one ground floor (Jens place) and one first floor (that was Sue and my place) with all things Scottish. She even provided heaps of alternative cereals, chocolates and 1lt of milk. Brilliant. We had a great 2x night stay in Inverness, but now it was time to move to our next destination - Jen the Inverness airport and Sue and I to Halkirk. 30 mins later we've said our fond farewells to Jen and are 2hrs 45mins away from our first stop. Today we are doing a spot of ancestral grave searching on my Mothers maiden name 'Clyne'. Sue has researched and discovered they were quite prolific within Thurso (top of Scotland) and 18 are buried in Halkirk Old Parish cemetery. After a fair bit of walking around in qui

Cawdor Castle, Fort George and Hootenanny's (live Scottish music) - 16 May

Slow start this morning. Grabbed a freebie croissant (from our previous accommodation) and warmed it up in the microwave before adding butter and strawberry jam. Just the thing to accompany my cup of coffee ☕. Bit overcast this morning but not too cold. Still having dry cough spasms but don't feel crook. Started taking lemsip capsules again, so fingers crossed they work as well as they did weeks ago. We are off to Cawdor Castle this morning. It's about 30 mins away from our location and we head off just after 10am. Cawdor Castle (previously called Calder - who is one of my G-G-G Grandmothers) has an interesting history. The legendary tale goes that the Thane of Cawdor, who had a small castle about a mile away, decided to build a new, stronger tower. Following the instructions received in a dream, he loaded a coffer of gold on to the back of a donkey and let it roam about the district for a day. Wherever the animal lay down to rest in the evening, there his castle should be site

Loch Ness Cruise, Culloden battlefields & Bronze Age Clava Cairns - 15 May

Not a great nights sleep last night. I seemed to have picked up a dry cough which doesn't last long, but is quite annoying. It seems to be in my chest, but I fill OK. Bought some lemsip which will hopefully knock it out in the coming days. Fun fact - when I bought it, I had to wait for approval from someone within the store!! Thankfully she did approve (must've been my trustworthy face) 😏. Good news is today's weather is fantastic. Sun is shining, barely a cloud in the sky. We head off for our one hour 11am cruise very excited. Our guide Nick is a happy-go-lucky guy with a fantastic deep Scottish accent and you can tell straight away he loves his job. He quickly informs us this is the best day on Loch Ness Lake this year. The water looks like glass and this is the view as we head out - great start to our cruise: As we venture around the Loch we discover lots of fun facts about the Lake. For example: it lies in the Glen Mor (or Great Glen) which bisects the Highlands and fo
